What you are renting
A working antique typewriter, owned by Analog Pursuit. You are borrowing it for a set period — you are not buying it, and ownership does not transfer.
Every machine is cleaned, tested, and typed before it goes out, and arrives with a fresh ribbon. We record its condition and its declared replacement value on a condition report before delivery, and we photograph it before it leaves and again when it comes back. You will receive a copy of that condition report.
These are machines between roughly 55 and 90 years old. They are mechanically sound and we stand behind them, but they are not new equipment and parts are often unavailable.
Who can rent
You must be at least 18 years old and able to enter into a contract. If you are renting on behalf of a business, you must be authorized to bind that business.
Rates and payment
Rates depend on the machine and how long you keep it. Current rates for each machine are shown on its page.
We offer three kinds of rental, priced differently:
• Individual rentals — daily, weekly, two-week, and monthly. Pickup in Eureka; delivery available for an additional fee.
• Event rentals — weddings, receptions, parties, and corporate events. Priced as a package including delivery, setup, ribbon and paper, and next-day retrieval.
• Production rentals — film, television, commercial, and theater. Priced by day and week, invoiced on net-30 terms.
Rental fees for individual rentals are charged when you book. California sales tax is collected on rental charges as required by law.
Deposits
A refundable security deposit applies to every individual and event rental. The amount depends on the machine and ranges from $200 to $450. It is shown on each machine's page before you book.
We take the deposit on the day your rental starts — not when you book.
• Rentals of five days or less: the amount is reserved on your card but not charged.
• Rentals longer than five days: the amount is charged to your card and refunded after return. Card networks release authorization holds after about a week, which is too short for a longer rental, so we charge and refund instead.
Either way, the deposit is released or refunded within 48 hours of return, provided the machine comes back on time, undamaged, and with everything it left with.
We cannot release a machine until the deposit has been successfully reserved or charged. Please make sure the card you booked with is still valid on your rental date.
Production rentals with a compliant certificate of insurance do not require a deposit.
Delivery and pickup
We deliver within Humboldt County by appointment.
• Within Eureka city limits: $15 each way
• Arcata, McKinleyville, Fortuna, and adjacent communities: $20 each way
• Beyond those areas: quoted individually
Someone 18 or older needs to be present to receive, inspect, and sign for the machine.
If you are collecting the machine yourself, please bring it back in the same secure, upright, padded condition it left in. Machines may not be transported in a car trunk or in the open bed of a pickup, and may not be shipped or mailed without our written permission.
Taking care of the machine
While a machine is with you, it is your responsibility — including damage caused by anyone else who handles it. At an event, that means your guests. On a set, that means your cast and crew.
Every rental comes with a Care and Use Guide. The short version:
• Keep drinks and food away from the machine
• Don't use it outdoors in rain, fog, or damp
• Strike keys firmly and directly; don't force anything that feels stuck
• Don't oil, lubricate, spray, or clean inside the machine
• Don't attempt repairs or adjustments
If something goes wrong mechanically, stop and call us. We would much rather talk you through it than have a small problem become a large one.
Damage, loss, and normal wear
Dust, fingerprints, and the ordinary marks of careful handling are expected and are not charged for.
Damage beyond that — dents, cracks, scratches or chips in the finish, broken keys or mechanisms, platen damage, bent type slugs, spills, liquid damage, or missing parts — is your responsibility, and repair costs may be applied against your deposit. If repair costs exceed the deposit, you are responsible for the balance.
If a machine is lost, stolen, or damaged beyond repair, you are responsible for its declared replacement value, which is written on the condition report before you take it, so there are no surprises.
We will let you know within 48 hours of return if any part of your deposit will be applied, with an itemized explanation and photographs where practical.
Cancellations
Cancellations must be sent to us in writing by email. The time we receive your email determines which terms apply.
Individual rentals
• More than 24 hours before your rental start date: full refund
• Less than 24 hours before: for daily rentals, half the fee is retained; for weekly, two-week, and monthly rentals, one day's fee is retained
• No-show without notice: the rental fee is forfeited
Because the deposit isn't taken until your rental starts, nothing is held or charged on a cancelled booking.
Event bookings hold a specific date and have their own terms. See our [Event and Production Booking Policy](#).
If we have to cancel — because of a mechanical failure, an emergency, or something outside our control — we will offer you a comparable machine from the collection wherever possible. If nothing suitable is available, you get a full refund of everything you have paid.
Late returns
Please return machines on time; they are usually booked for someone else. Late returns are charged at 150% of the daily rate for each day or part day overdue.
If you need more time, contact us at least 24 hours before your return date and we will extend the rental if the machine is available.
What we can and can't be responsible for
We stand behind our machines and will make things right if one fails. What we can offer is a substitute machine or a refund of what you paid.
We are not able to cover costs beyond that — for example, event expenses, lost shoot days, or the cost of sourcing a replacement elsewhere. If your event or production depends on a machine working, we recommend booking a second one.
Questions
Ask us before you book. We would rather explain something twice than have it come as a surprise later.
