There's a moment that happens to a lot of us somewhere between the third video call of the morning and the fourteenth notification before noon. A moment where you look at the screen in front of you and feel — not exactly bored, not exactly tired — but somehow distant from yourself. Like you've been speaking a language all day that isn't quite your own.
That feeling has a name, even if we rarely say it out loud. It's the quiet exhaustion of living entirely in the digital world. And more people than ever are looking for a way back to something slower, something physical, something that pushes back a little when you press it.
That's what brought Analog Pursuit to life.
Who We Are
We're long-time Humboldt residents — about fifteen years here now — and like most people who end up staying in this corner of the world, we fell in love with the place and couldn't bring ourselves to leave. There's something about Humboldt County that draws people who value the unhurried, the handmade, the genuine. A community that has always had a healthy skepticism of anything that comes at the cost of real human connection. We feel at home here, and Analog Pursuit is, in every sense, a Humboldt business — rooted in this community, built around its values, and hoping to grow alongside it.
Analog Pursuit offers vintage typewriter rentals, stationery, typewriter ribbons, and journaling supplies, available for local delivery by appointment. Through our website at analogpursuit.com, you can browse a growing collection of beautifully maintained machines spanning four decades — from a near-mint 1935 Remington Rand Model 1 to the sleek Italian lines of a 1968 Olivetti Lettera 33 — each with its own personality, its own history, and its own particular way of asking you to slow down and pay attention.
Why Typewriters? Why Now?
We are not the first people to notice that something is shifting. Vinyl record sales have grown for more than fifteen consecutive years. Film photography has made a remarkable comeback. Independent bookstores are thriving in ways that seemed impossible a decade ago. People are baking bread by hand, writing letters, developing film in their bathrooms. The cultural appetite for things that are physical, tactile, and genuinely present is real and growing.
A typewriter is the purest expression of that impulse. There is no autocorrect, no notifications, no open tab pulling your attention elsewhere. There is only the page, the keys, and the thought you're trying to put into the world. Every word costs something — a keystroke, a commitment — and that weight turns out to be a gift. Writers who have spent time on a vintage machine often describe the same experience: that they wrote differently on a typewriter. More deliberately. More honestly.

We built Analog Pursuit with a wide range of people in mind. Writers working on poetry, novels, memoirs, or correspondence who want to step away from the screen. Artists incorporating typewritten text into their visual work. Couples who want a vintage typewriter at their wedding for guests to leave notes and well-wishes — a guest book with a soul. Film and theater productions in need of working, period-authentic props that can actually type. And anyone who is simply curious — who has walked past one of these machines somewhere and thought, I wonder what it would feel like.

Our Vision for This Community
We have plans that go well beyond the website. We want to organize and co-host type-ins — gatherings where people bring or borrow typewriters and simply write together — at local bookstores, coffee shops, and community spaces throughout Eureka and Arcata. We're hoping to participate in events like Arts Alive, Eureka's beloved monthly celebration of art and community in Old Town. We'd love to build real partnerships with other local businesses who share our belief that Humboldt County's creative community deserves places and experiences that reflect its character.
We haven't made those calls yet. We wanted to have a home to invite people to first — a website that reflects the seriousness and care we're bringing to this.
